About the challenge

In this codeathon, teams will compete to design and improve user experience for a US-based charity BigShouldersFund.

Big Shoulders Fund is an independent charitable organization that supports a network of 72 schools with demonstrated need in the Chicago area. These schools serve nearly 20,000 children, 65 percent of whom reside in low-income households. In addition, as a result of a fully funded charitable donation, it has extended its programming to 19 schools in Northwest Indiana, reaching an additional 5,000 children.

Founded in 1986, it has raised more than $600 million to date. These funds go directly towards supporting a variety of programs and operational needs including scholarship support and academic enrichment for students, operational improvements for schools, leadership development programs for the next generation of school leaders, and academic programs and professional development for teachers.

For more than 37 years, Big Shoulders Fund has helped Chicago’s children in need achieve their dreams through access to a quality, values-based education. Big Shoulders Fund accomplishes this by investing more than $40 million annually to ensure that students receive a strong academic foundation in elementary school, go on to enroll in quality college prep high schools, attend and stay in college, and lead productive lives as adults. Big Shoulders Fund is unique in that administrative expenses are supported by an endowment and other income, which ensures 100 percent of funds currently raised go toward programs that benefit Big Shoulders Fund schools and the students they serve.
